Zulte Waregem announced in the evening of Wednesday, July 4, 2018, that they have reached an agreement with the Spanish club Primera Division of Celta Vigo about the final transfer of Theo Bongonda. The talented left-outback has signed a four-year deal at the Rainbow Stadium.
Bongonda, 22, was on loan to Essevee in the second half of last season. The Carolo scored five goals in thirteen duels. He was at his best in the playoffs 2, Zulte Waregem made it all the way to the final. Bongonda, a product of Jean-Marc Guillou Academy, had already played for Zulte Waregem for the first time in January 2013. For the following two years, the Belgian international youth had made a strong impression. Foreign clubs came to pick him up and Celta Vigo was the chosen team in January 2015 with a four and a half year contract. Bongonda – despite 77 meetings – never managed to become a starter. A six-month loan in Trabzonspor, Turkey, between July 2017 and January 2018 was a failure. After which Zulte Waregem again proved to be beneficial for the player last January.
